This degree will provide you with advanced training in sociology, focusing on contemporary theories, themes and debates. You will develop your social research skills enabling you to move into a variety of careers as well as providing opportunities for further academic research. The course combines four core modules with two option modules which, along with your dissertation, allow you to specialise in your preferred area of sociological research. In the core modules you will explore some of the main problems of contemporary societies, such as environmental change, terrorism, or the role of the media, together with analysis of theoretical developments in sociology in recent decades. You will gain a deeper understanding of the practical applications of sociological research in the public context. The option modules provide the opportunity for more intense specialisation in areas of sociological research in which department staff are currently active.
