Do you want to secure a career in management, consulting, or research, with a desire to specialise in business and technology transformation and innovation? Or in responsible tech jobs designed to manage the ethical, legal, and social implications of new technologies in organisations? As technology becomes increasingly advanced, there is a growing need to consider how different technologies can optimise business outcomes while supporting workforce engagement, enhancing job quality & providing ‘good work’. Macro external factors such as the global pandemic, which accelerated changes in how technology is used in many organisations, make the responsible deployment and use of technology even more important. This MSc programme is designed for students who want to cultivate a richer social scientific understanding of the relationships between people and technology, and to develop the research and intellectual skills to grow and evolve their knowledge in a fast-moving technological landscape.

Key benefits

  • Unrivalled location in the centre of London.
  • King’s Business School is an ideal home for this Masters, given its strategic research focus on digitalisation; the focus on technology and expertise in the Public Services Management & Organisation department; and our connections to the King’s AI Institute.
  • The programme is designed to support you to develop a ‘digital mindset’ – that is, an appreciation of the realistic potential for, and limitations of, new technologies.
  • Engagement with experts from public, private and third sector organisations who will discuss the implementation and evaluation of new technologies.
  • Opportunities to apply knowledge and skills developed on the programme in an intensive team-based design sprint.

The rapid proliferation of digital tools and new technologies presents unique opportunities for every organisation, whether in the public, private or non-profit sectors. However, these technologies are created, implemented, used, and accepted or resisted by people, so understanding the relationships between people and technologies is fundamental to understanding new opportunities and challenges for organisations. Furthermore, tools like generative AI and robotics give rise to complex and contested relationships between people and technologies – raising questions around ethics, expertise, trust and accountability. Indeed, in many cases, the reason for the success or failure of technology projects is not down to technical issues, but rather the extent to which technologies resonate with people – their expectations, their work practices, their knowledge and their skills.

Therefore, this programme is designed to support you to better understand the social and organisational contexts in which technologies are deployed and used. It demystifies new technologies; introduces methods and techniques to understand ‘user’ needs; and reflects on alternative approaches to managing change. This combination is vital for those leading and adapting to change in organisations.
