
In our weekly MOOC Review section we present Berkeley University’s free online course “How to Write an Essay”, an introduction to academic writing for English language learners, focusing on essay development, grammatical correctness, and self-editing.
The course has a duration of five weeks and it will teach you basic grammar terminology and understanding. It will also give you an idea on how to write effective sentences and paragraphs, how to tackle writing introductions and conclusions and will offer you some strategies for writing longer texts and thesis statements. The course can also be useful for students who are preparing for the essay-writing parts of IELTS, TOEFL and all kind of academic writing assignments.
About the course
The course gives you the chance to review basic grammar terminology and understanding; writing effective sentences and paragraphs; introductions and conclusions; strategies for writing longer texts; and thesis statements. The course materials will be offered via reading texts and videos. An optional course workbook, in e-book form, may be used for additional writing work. Students will participate in online discussions as well as peer review. Students will complete an essay.
The unique thing about this course is that UC Berkeley is partnering with the US Department of State and US Embassies which will host facilitated discussion sessions around the course content in order to maximise the learning experience. Education USA, , the network supported by the State Department, will also offer facilitated discussions in some locations for students interested in pursuing higher education in the United States.
